With perfect Christmas timing, Gauntleys have announced that their second ever single cask bottling of malt has finally arrived! Like the first bottling, this emanates from the island of Islay and is a real peaty beastie!
On this occasion Chris has sourced a fantastic Staoisha (peated Bunnahabhain) which has been aged 8 years in Bourbon casks. As with most other single cask bottlings, this is non-chill filtered and has not had any additional colouring added. Bottled at 58.1% ABV, it’s guaranteed to warm all the extremities on a cold winters’ night!
This bottling is LIMITED to 108 bottles in total – some of which have been pre-sold – so don’t hang around thinking about it – just buy it!
The 1880 Collection: The Officers Mess Bottling No2 Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2013 (8 years old)
A crisp, fresh nose that has a feel of old school Caol Ila about it. White fruit, subtle peat, tar, earth, rock pools. Subtle sweet barley balances the stringent coastal notes.
The palate opens with soft, oily barley and white fruit. The peat is earthier in character with slightly stringent coastal notes of salt, tar and coffee. Very subtle oak input and a touch of pepper on the middle. A little masked but a pleasant, sweet barley finish with pulped white fruit, herbal peat, coffee and tobacco in the after-taste.
Water gives the barley and white fruit a sweeter edge. Subtler peat and hints of lemon now. The palate is similar to the nose, less intense now and maybe a bit less complex but rounded and still quite salty and astringent. Good chewy finish with subtle charred oak notes, smoked meat and earthy peat.
